History of Matuku Island
In 1827, Jules Dumont d'Urville became the first European to discover the island.
According to the oral history of the local Matuku population, the island was not conquered by Enele Ma'afu. However, historical records indicate otherwise.
The missionary Thomas Williams recorded in his diary that Matuku was conquered by Ma'afu in 1853. Despite Williams' diary stating that Matuku was among the islands subdued by Ma'afu, the customs and traditions of Matuku Island and its people remain distinct from those of other islands in the Lau Group that were conquered.
